Do people consider Nurse Practitioners the same was Registered Nurses?

I want to gain more knowledge and skill than nurses (RNs), but I don't think I can handle training to become a doctor... so I'm thinking of becoming a practitioner nurse. What is it like being a practitioner nurse? What courses do you have to take in order to become one?
