Becoming a Nurse Practitioner?

i want to become a nurse practitioner and i was wondering what the best way of doing that would be.. I hear people become RN's first, and then go to a university to get a bachelors degree in nursing.. ive heard of other ways too and was wondering what way can take a shorter time and the things i have to do after it to become a nurse practitioner
