How are tests for asthma performed? ?

A nurse practitioner only listened to my 2 yr old daughter's chest with a stethoscope and diagnosed her with asthma. I thought the tests would be more in depth than that. My child keeps a slight cough (shes in day care) but has no breathing issues at all. Just looking for opinions, I know to talk to the dr as well...
